Mrs. Gloria Greene

Tichigan – Gloria D. Greene, 87, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital – Milwaukee on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. Gloria was born in 1922 to Oliver and Dorothy Iehl and resided in Chicago, Illinois. Gloria attended Lucy Flower Girls Technical School. Gloria learned to become a master seamstress and went on to work at Marshall Field’s - Downtown Chicago as a custom dressmaker. Gloria met her future husband while on a blind date that was set up by her friend G. Edwin Greene. Earnest Greene and Gloria enjoyed three dates before he had to return to active duty in the Coast Guard stationed at Norfolk, Virginia. They corresponded for six weeks until Earnest returned and proposed on Palm Sunday, 1943. The couple was married one week later on Easter Sunday and Earnest preceded Gloria in death one week prior to their 65th wedding anniversary. During their married life in Virginia, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin they raised a wonderful family of five. Gloria became well known as the friendly neighborhood “Avon Lady”. Many of her customers were from Young Radiator, where her husband was an employee. Gloria was a very strong women and a survivor of polio and cancer. She was a member of the Racine-Kenosha Ostomy Club and the Milwaukee Area Post-Polio Group. Gloria and Earnest loved to travel. After they retired, the couple took extended trips across the country to visit family and friends. A loving and supportive mother, she is survived by Penny (Marlin) Elkins of California, James (Dawn Van Dyke) of New Jersey, Victoria (Thomas) Ritenour of California, David (Julie) of Oregon, and Rebecca of Wisconsin. Along with three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, Gloria’s brother Charles (Mynette) Iehl and nieces and nephews of Illinois. In her later years, Gloria’s constant loving companions were her beloved dogs, Auggie and Ziggy. In addition to her loving husband she was preceded in death by her parents. A visitation service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday August 25, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday August 26, 2010 at 1:00 pm. A private burial will take place at Prairieville Cemetery in Albion, Iowa.
