Bernell Marlin “Bernie” Kocher passed to eternal life on November 6, 2024. He joined his wife of 58 years, Margaret Ann “Peggy” Kocher (nee Priest).
Born in West Bend, Wisconsin on November 11, 1937, the son of Elroy and Norma (nee Zimmel) Kocher. After graduating from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee, he served the citizens of his country by joining the Army. On May 25, 1963, he married Peggy. The couple lived in Milwaukee for many years before moving “up north” to Scandinavia, Wisconsin. Above all Bernie wanted to honor God. He and Peggy worked with and served the members of Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amherst Junction for many years. They led Bible studies, wrote weekly bulletins and were caretakers of the church property.
Bernie dedicated his law enforcement career to safeguarding the security of citizens of Milwaukee from 1961-1989, then in Plover, WI from 1989-2003. After many years on patrol, he worked at the Milwaukee Police Academy preparing new recruits for life on the street. While in Plover he initiated numerous programs and policies while continuing to be a loving husband, father and grandfather. His “retirement” included traveling around the state to present the training program, Duty First, that he created for police supervisors. He also taught Ethics in Law Enforcement at Mid-State Technical College for several years. His goal was to teach police officers to serve their community with commitment, bravery and above all, with integrity. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9
When is the game on? Brewers, Packers, and UW Badgers, these were his teams! He would also watch “roundball” and cheer for the Bucks. If a local team wasn’t playing, he would watch, but it wasn’t quite the same.
Survived by his daughter, Nancy Hauler, Grandchildren Alex and Evan (Amanda) Hauler. His sister Norann Kocher, and other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his wife, Peggy and parents.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, from 10-10:45am; the service starting at 11am at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iola, 125 North Street, Iola WI 54945.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, www.wels.net or Habitat for Humanity, www.habitat.org
