Nickel, Barbara Ann.
(Nee Talaska)
Barbara Ann Nickel, 89, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was called home by our Lord and Savior with family by her side on June 2, 2024. Barbara graduated from St. John’s Cathedral, enlisted in the Air Force (Honorable discharge) before marrying and starting a family. Barbara was creative and used her artistic talents in many ways for the enjoyment of her family including decorating her children’s bicycles, floats and other items for 4th of July parades. Barbara also had a passion for flowers and designed and meticulously landscaped her yard with the help of her companion John Wade. The City of Milwaukee recognized their hard work with numerous neighborhood garden awards. Barbara had a love for all animals, raising Sheltie puppies, kittens as well as other creatures that made their way into the house through the years.
Her love for plants and animals led her to volunteering at The Friends of Wehr Nature Center for over 20+ years. She enjoyed giving tours to children that came to the Nature Center as well as caring for reptiles, planting foliage, taking bird counts and maintaining the trails.
In her younger years, Barbara was active in tennis and golf with many of her friends. She also embraced the Jamaican culture and loved their music, food, rum as well as the beaches. This passion led to more than 50 trips to Jamaica. She enjoyed that the Jamaican locals referred to her as a Jamerican.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Roman and Eleanor Talaska (nee Stuth), her brother James Talaska, her loving husband Allyn Nickel and her dear and faithful companion, John Wade. Barbara is survived by her 5 children, Michael Nickel (Jane Weske), James Nickel (Carrie), Thomas Nickel (Karin), Barbara Jean Hill (Kenneth) and Jodi Lehner (Mike Berry). She is also survived by her eight Grandchildren: Shannon Laidler (Matt), Amber Brog (Craig), Daniel Hill (Ashley), Michelle Baker (Kyle), Colleen Kwiatkowski (Kevin), Tracey Nickel, Kathryn Nickel, David Nickel, as well as 7 Great Grandchildren and the Wade family.
Memorial visitation will be held 2PM-3:45PM Friday, June 21, 2024 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Faith Community (305 S 1st Street, Waterford, WI 53185), with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 4PM.
In remembrance of Barbara, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Friends of Wehr Nature Center or a local pet rescue shelter of your choice.
The family expresses their sincere appreciation to the entire staff at Waterford Place for all the care given to Barbara along with the St. Croix Hospice team.
